The Eco-Terrorists draws on the history of protest in New Zealand, with references to Bastion Point, the Springbok Tour, David Lange’s speech at the Oxford University Debate, protests against nuclear ship visits, and New Zealand’s nuclear free policy. The fictitious Deep Waters Community sees itself as part of this history of protest. One of the themes of the film is how effectual such protest is, and whether violence should be used to effect change in the world. Each of the characters represent a different position. Ara just wants everyone to “love one another”. Adi and Mason advocate the use of violence, while Zig represents the more commonly held pacifist position.
This debate continues today with more recent protest actions such as the protest against the Waihopai Spybase by three Christian anarchists, which was non-violent but caused over one million dollars damage to property. Jeff has closely followed these protestors. He is personal friends with the “Waihopai Three” and the Eco-Terrorists script draws heavily on his experience with these, and other activists.
