| The Eco-Terrorists tells the story of a group of New Zealand environmentalists who sail a restored WW2 German Uboat to the Antarctic to save whales in 1986. Ara, the main character, is an innocent \young woman who believes in the power of love and wants to change the world. |
| But just when the group find the Japanese whaling fleet, Ara discovers the true nature of the group's mission: to torpedo the whaling factory ship and kill the whalers. |
The Eco-Terrorists explores how ordinary, kind and gentle people respond in a crisis when their lives are threatened. Does people's natural tendency towards goodness prevail, or will their instinct for self-preservation lead them to kill others in order to save themselves? This film shows the dark side of human nature: Lord of the Flies meets Das Boot; it's The Shining in a submarine. The film also has its context within the history
of NZ protest movements: from Bastion Point, protests against nuclear ship visits, the Springbok Tour, the Sinking of the Rainbow Warrior, Lange's debate at the Oxford Union and NZ's nuclear free legislation. |
The Eco-Terrorists is a feature film that tells the story of the Deep Waters Community, which launched a restored World War 2 German U-boat in 1986, to torpedo Japanese whaling ships in the Antartic. |
